About Vane Kosturanov

Vane Kosturanov is a Macedonian painter, illustrator, and graphic designer, born in 1979 in Strumica. His work spans several visual disciplines, with painting at the core of his artistic practice.

One of the most recognizable and consistently explored motifs in his work is the house, not merely as an architectural form, but as a symbol of home, belonging, security, memory, and the human need to have a place of one’s own in the world.

This exploration of home and belonging takes different forms throughout his paintings, through houses, figures, portraits, and simple, almost archetypal scenes. Kosturanov creates a visual world in which the external and internal constantly intertwine. The house can become a shelter, a memory, a longing, a boundary, or an absence, a place one inhabits, but also a state one carries within.

His visual language is simple and direct, marked by a strong sense of poetry and sensitivity to the human condition. Behind seemingly simple forms lie themes of intimacy, family, childhood, solitude, restlessness, loss, love, and the need for connection. Rather than telling stories literally, his paintings leave space for viewers to recognize their own memories and emotions within them.

The exploration of the human inner world is also present in his more recent series and exhibitions, including “Portrait of Unrest,” where portraiture and the human figure become a means of focusing on personal and psychological states.

Alongside his painting, Kosturanov is an author and illustrator of children’s picture books. His interest in home, family, childhood, and belonging can also be recognized in these works. He approaches his picture books as complete works of authorship, in which text and image work together to shape the story. His visual language in the books remains closely connected to his painting, simple, warm, poetic, and emotionally driven. His work as an illustrator has received awards, and his books have been published and translated into more than ten languages outside Macedonia.

In addition to his personal artistic practice, he has worked professionally for more than two decades in graphic design, visual identity, poster, illustration, and icon design. He has also illustrated texts by other authors and created illustrations and cover designs for books. He is the founder and creative director of several digital design projects and, throughout his career, has collaborated with companies and organizations both in Macedonia and internationally.

Theatre poster design is another significant part of his work. As the author of numerous posters for theatrical productions, primarily for the Anton Panov Cultural Centre in Strumica, Kosturanov has developed an approach in which the poster is not merely an informative or decorative form, but an independent visual interpretation of the dramatic work. Through a refined composition, symbolism, and a strong central idea, he seeks to convey the essence, atmosphere, or conflict of the performance.

Despite the variety of media in which he works, a clear and continuous artistic thread runs through Vane Kosturanov’s practice. Whether on a painted canvas, the page of a picture book, or a theatre poster, his work is recognizable for its simplicity of form, poetic quality, and human emotion. At its centre are the individual and the search for home, home as a physical space, a memory, a relationship with others, and the feeling of belonging somewhere. This ongoing exploration of the house, home, and belonging remains one of the most distinctive features of his work.
